Join WPA on it’s maiden adventure to the stunning wild’s of Costa Rica in Central America, where you will discover a remarkable country that harbours an impressive array of over 500,000 fauna species. Costa Rica boasts the largest percentage of national parks and protected areas compared to any other country worldwide, covering about 25% of its land area. One of the key factors contributing to Costa Rica’s extraordinary biodiversity is its unique geographical location. Acting as a land bridge between North and South America. Roughly three to five million years ago, Costa Rica facilitated the mingling of distinct flora and fauna from both continents. As a result, this ecological crossroads is home to hundreds of endemic species, including frogs, snakes, lizards, finches, hummingbirds, gophers, mice, and more. Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity owes much to its diverse range of ecosystems. From tropical rainforests and deciduous forests to Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, cloud forests, and mangrove forests, a wide variety of habitats can be found throughout the country. These distinct environments provide refuge for a staggering diversity of species. In particular, bird enthusiasts will be captivated by Costa Rica’s avian abundance. Your WPA guides, along with local expert nature guide, will use their experience to offer a wide range of subjects and unique shoot opportunities.

DAY 1 - SAN JOSÉ

September 17

We include accommodation tonight, meeting at 4pm for a workshop and a chance to ask questions. We include our first group dinner.

DAY 2: DRIVE TO DOTA

September 18

After breakfast we will drive in our exclusive mini bus to the first of three geographic destinations covered in this superb itinerary. The Highlands of Costa Rica in the “Mountain of Life”. Our main target will be to photograph a miracle of evolution, the magnificent Resplendent Quetzal, an amazing bird worshipped by the Mesoamerican civilizations. It is also a Great place to Photograph hummingbirds , our first Quetzal Tour takes place in the afternoon.

DAY 3: DOTA

September 19

Early morning - second Quetzal Tour and birding around the lodge. The most common hummingbirds at this elevation are: Talamanca Hummingbird, Lesser Violet-ear, Whitethroated Mountain gem and Volcano Hummingbird. Around midday, we will drive to a special garden to have lunch and photograph our first toucan species, the Emerald Toucanet.

Many other birds are regular visitors at the feeders, such as Silver-throated Tanager, Flame-colored Tanager, Tennessee Warbler, Slaty Flowerpiercer, Long-tailed Silky Flycatcher, Golden-browed Chlorophonia and others.
