Cairns & Atherton Tablelands Photography Workshop

Explore the tropical landscapes and wildlife of Far North Queensland on our Cairns & Atherton Tablelands Workshop. From Cairns we journey into the Atherton Tablelands, photographing rainforest, waterfalls and an incredible variety of tropical wildlife, with special night shoots targeting rare creatures including possums, reptiles and perhaps tree kangaroos. We also explore the Daintree River on two nature cruises, with opportunities to photograph crocodiles, kingfishers, reptiles and other tropical birdlife. With a small group and hands-on photography tuition throughout, this workshop combines wildlife, landscapes, macro and creative photography across one of Australia’s most diverse natural regions.

DAY 1 - CAIRNS

June 27

We are based the entire workshop in Cairns at a resort on the Esplanade. We meet at 2pm for a workshop and a chance to ask questions. Quality time is important to maximise your questions. This is followed by our first shoot near our accommodation. A chance to capture bird and creative images and ask question. Option to join your tutor for dinner.

DAY 2 - CAIRNS TO WATERFALLS

June 28

We depart Cairns at 7am this morning, driving south, and then west to target waterfalls and rainforest.

These are not just any waterfalls, but some of the most beautiful in Australia. A full day of moderate walking with an emphasis on learning the best techniques and trying some angles that are new and creative.

Today will also offer you fun creative shoots from running water over rocks and moss to unique lighting in the forest. Darran will work hard to show you subjects you might walk past and techniques that will allow you to see new potential capture opportunities.

We return to Cairns late afternoon.

DAY 3 - CAIRNS TO ATHERTON TABLELANDS

June 29

Full day exploring the Atherton Tablelands region. This will include walks via trails that cut through the rainforest to lake views. New birds, plants and creatures will offer new images. We include workshops on the spot for macro and creative subjects. We also include a shoot with the very cute Mareeba Rock Wallabies. We return to Cairns for a workshop to start processing some of your images and a late afternoon shoot as time allows.

DAY 4 - CAIRNS TO DAINTREE

June 30

We drive north to the Daintree region and a early morning cruise on the Daintree River. This will open up new wildlife from crocodiles to kingfishers, reptiles to other bird species. Have those long telephoto lenses ready! We drive to the Wildlife Habitat, near Port Douglas for a session of photographing creatures that are not easy to capture. Darran will assist with nature portraits and concepts for unique results. We time our second Daintree River cruise this afternoon for the best conditions. You are guaranteed new subjects which means brand new captures.

We arrive back in Cairns later this afternoon and the end of the workshop. Arrival time can not be guaranteed so we suggest that you book another nights accommodation, or extend your time in Cairns.
